Today, Universal Pictures announced they have begun development on a live-action reboot of the classic Archie Comics. The character has been a comic book strip for over 85 years and has been a staple title after Scooby-Doo, The Jetsons, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The new reboot will be produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord (Across the Spider-Verse, 21 Jump Street). Comicbook writer Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) pitched the movie and will pen the script. “We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and the gang in all of their iterations. When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.” Miller and Lord added in a statement.

The CW already developed the modern-day live-action series, Riverdale, that ran from 2017 to 2023 before getting canceled. The network show produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash). While initially the show was an adaptation of the mystery teen comics, it eventually deviated significantly by adding in superpowers and multiversal dopplegangers. It’s unknown if Miller and Lord will direct this upcoming adaptation.
