Over the weekend, director Matt Reeves revealed to Variety that his work on The Batman 2 has been long and stressful due to many personal issues he has overcome over the last year. However, he expects to submit the script for the film and begin production by the end of 2025, with Robert Pattinson returning as Bruce Wayne. He hinted that James Gunn might integrate his Batman universe into the newly created DC Cinematic Universe, starting with this year’s Superman movie starring David Corenswet.
“It really comes down to whether it makes sense. There was a story I wanted to tell. The epic crime saga. It’s been important to me to play that out and James and Peter have been really great about that. They are letting us do that. What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea. My head is down right now on getting ‘The Batman Part II’ shooting, which is the most important thing.”
Many fans are split on whether Matt Reeve’s universe should be forced into the DCU or remain separate. Well, now Batman: The Brave and The Bold director Andy Muschietti clearly states both are going to be separate and WB is trying to figure out how to have two different Batman films be released relatively close to each other:
“The Batman that will be in THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD will belong to the new DC Universe. Obviously, Matt Reeves’ Batman is not part of [the new DCU]. However, DC and Warner Bros. are moving forward with the second part of Reeves’ Batman series, which, as widely reported, will be released in 2027. Releasing two Batman films [at the same time] would be absurd. DC is creating a strategy to ensure these two films don’t conflict with each other. Regarding my involvement in the project…they want to do the movie with me, and I want to do it as well. I’m [excited] to work on the film.”
I think most people lean toward the idea that Matt Reeve’s gritty take on Batman should remain separate and not retroactively be in the DCU all along. What Andy Muschietti can do with his take on Batman is make him more humorous, as seen in many of the animated shows the character has appeared in, to differentiate him from all previous incarnations.
The Batman 2 is slated to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2027
