Recently, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that The Walking Dead and Black Panther star Danai Gurira would be returning to star in an original Black Panther series about her origin story on Disney+. The report made many believe this would be a solo series separate from the previously announced Kingdom of Wakanda series also in development from director Ryan Coogler. Now, Collider has confirmed that both series are “one-in-the-same” and not separate. She will also be appearing in the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Production will begin this summer in Atlanta.
Gurira plays the part of Okoye; leader of the all-female royal guards the Dora Milaje. It will be interesting to see if this show will actually be an origin story for the entire Dora Milaje. Recently, Florence Kasumba returned in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Disney+ series as Ayo. She was tasked with returning Baron Zemo back to Wakanda to stand trial. She was given more of a fleshed-out story as the one that helped Bucky Barnes overcome his Winter Soldier programming.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters July 8th, 2022
