Today, the negotiation committee for SAG-AFTRA reached a tentative agreement with every major Hollywood studio through AMPTP. The strike is officially over after 118 days that effectively shut down all major Hollywood productions. The ongoing actor’s strike was similar to the WGA writer’s strike earlier this summer. The actors’ main concerns were the studio’s residuals/bonus structure (which increased for top-performing streaming shows) and the use of AI. The two sides have been working 12-hour days for the last two weeks trying to agree. The studios pushed hard to keep AI in perpetuity without an actor’s consent.
However, after intense negotiations, the studios caved and put in safeguards regarding an actor’s AI scan. Anytime a scan is used, the actor must first give consent and will be paid per usage. If the actor dies, the decision will land with their estate. The deal will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. on November 9th for three years. The entire guild must still vote on the deal to have it ratified and take effect. Productions around Hollywood will most likely kickstart at the beginning of the year after Christmas. Many productions like Deadpool 3 and Venom 3 will also finish up production around this time. Actors may also begin promoting their products starting tomorrow.
