Today, Warner Brothers announced a slew of new Lord of the Rings films with Embracer Group Sweden. The new films are expected not to be a retread of the classic Peter Jackson trilogy that won a multitude of Academy Awards. The new films could be anywhere from prequels set in the First Age (if the rights were fixed), co-current during The Third Age, or sequel films set in the Fourth Age.
Fans have wondered if Peter Jackson, along with his co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, will be involved with these new films. Surprisingly, they have already weighed in on the upcoming films, which doesn’t sound like a total no, according to Deadline:
“Warner Brothers and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way. We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
Jackson revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in August 2022 that he was contacted by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay for The Rings of Power to help consult on their episode scripts. Unfortunately, for legal reasons, Amazon Studios had to cease communication with the director without much explanation. Even though he was open to help in the universe of Middle-Earth again. Philippa Boyens is already helping consult on The War of the Rohirrim anime, set to release in April 2024.
