We have heard for several years that the Pokemon Company is still hard at work developing more live-action projects set in the world of Pokemon after the success of 2019’s Detective Pikachu. A sequel has long been in development but has since moved to Netflix with director Jonathan Krisel attached. In 2021, screenwriter Joe Henderson boarded an untitled TV series project rumored to follow the video game character Red and not Ash Ketchum from the original anime.
Over the weekend, it was revealed that Pokemon’s video game developer, Game Freak, had been hacked by a third party back in August. The hack was used to steal the personal data of hundreds of employees who worked for the company and post it online. Part of the hack also revealed several scrapped video games, several video games in development, and several of their upcoming live-action projects.
The hack confirmed that the Detective Pikachu sequel is still in development at Legendary and is currently titled “The Great Detective Pikachu.” It also stated that Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is attached to direct now. The hack also revealed that the untitled TV series is currently under the working title Project Discovery and will be eight episodes long for Netflix, with the streaming service considering a 5 season arc.
