In 2019, Legendary Pictures released the first live-action Pokemon movie starring Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu. The film was a commercial and critical success, with fans praising it for its humor and accurate adaption of the Japanese anime. The studio quickly put into development a sequel, but the COVID-19 pandemic hit the following year haunting Hollywood altogether. In 2021, Netflix gained the rights to the Pokemon franchise and announced a new live-action series that was in the works under writer Joe Henderson.

Today, Polygon.com reached out to Legendary Pictures to get information on the previously announced Detective Pikachu sequel. According to the report, the film is still “in active development” by the studio. It’s unknown if Legendary will distribute the sequel on Netflix or with their new partner Sony following their departure from Warner Brothers.
