Today, a new rumor announces that British actress Kate Winslet has entered talks for the supporting female role in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. We at Knight Edge Media had written about this role several days ago and suggested several characters it could be. One of the characters was Gollum’s grandmother, who is the matriarch of their village.

The other possible role is Gilraen the Fair and mother of Aragorn. If the film shows flashbacks of Aragorn’s childhood, his mother was present up until right before The Fellowship of the Ring, then died in Rivendell. It should be noted that she is only in talks, and the role is still completely unknown. Leo Woodall (Nuremberg) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) are also rumored to be cast in the film as recasts of Aragorn and Arwen. Production begins this May in New Zealand. Ironically, Winslet was Peter Jackson’s first choice for Éowyn back in the 1990s before passing on the role, and it going to Miranda Otto (via Far Out Magazine).
UPDATE: Deadline has confirmed Winslet’s casting and states she will be filming for 5 months. According to Top News Prime, Winslet will play Smeagol’s grandmother after all.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on December 17th, 2027
