Today, Universal Pictures is next up to showcase its upcoming slate of films to exhibitors at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. They started the day by giving those in attendance a two-month early screening of their How To Train Your Dragon live-action remake. The film was given high praise by those in attendance (via Variety), citing it’s not just a shot-for-shot remake of the animated movie 2010, but adds life to the familiar story. It’s not surprising the studio is touting the film as the next big franchise, considering it had many test screenings last year and this early screening for many critics. The film will be released theatrically on June 13th.
Later in the day, during their slate, the studio revealed they had already greenlit the sequel. The film is currently slated to hit theaters on June 11th, 2027. It’s unknown if the sequel will be an adaptation of the second animated film in the original animated trilogy or if they will try to do their own thing in the live-action version. Director Dean DeBlois is expected to return alongside returning cast members Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast.
CinemaCon 2025 takes place March 31st through April 3rd in Las Vegas
