We at Knight Edge Media were the first to reveal last year that Avatar Studios was developing a secret animated series after Avatar: Seven Havens. The series was made under the working titles Red Thunder and Metal Mountain. We recently learned it has been trademarked under the actual title Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos. We have since revealed some plot points about the swashbuckling series, which will follow Avatar Kuruk in his early days before the events of the Avatar Kyoshi novels. The series is showrun by screenwriter Migizi Pensoneau (Reservation Dogs, Alien: Earth). Hopefully, the series will be officially announced during New York Comic-Con on October 9th.
However, we can once again confirm that, from the previous casting call, the character “Baroo” was for Kuruk himself. They looked for a young teenage Indigenous/First Nations actor to voice the character. We can now reveal that Kuruk had a previous proto-Team Avatar that traveled with him around the world before he learned the other elements. This team differs from the one we learn about in the Avatar Kyoshi novels, as that group included earthbender Jianzhu and airbender Kelsang, along with firebenders Hei-Ran and Nyahitha.
This new Team Avatar will all be from the Water Tribe as they set out on their first adventure. We can reveal that the character of “Meebs” is actually named Misunka in the series, and he is the son of the Northern Water Tribe Chief. They will be accompanied by a female Water Tribe member named Hopa. Interestingly, she only knows the sub-bending category of Icebending, not traditional Waterbending (think Ghazan of the Red Lotus, who only Lavabends). As always, Kuruk, being the flirt that he is, will have romantic feelings for Hopa, as he does with Hei-Ren and Ummi in the future. Finally, Kuruk will have a koala-otter named Nikik as his animal guide.
Now, we need to correct a small error in our previous reporting. We learned that when the series was first developed under the working title Red Thunder, it would feature an older Indigenous woman as Kuruk’s waterbending teacher under the codename “Deela.” When the series underwent a creative overhaul under the working title Metal Mountain, they cast a younger Indigenous woman. We assumed it was the same character reworked for the series, since both actresses were high-profile Indigenous women. However, they play two completely different characters and will be pleasantly surprised if both sign on for the series. We can reveal that “Deela’s” real name in the series is actually Gawose, Kuruk’s middle-aged waterbending teacher, who eventually hunts him across the world. She has nothing to do with Tagaka from the Kyohsi novels, as we had speculated. As we previously reported, the 5th Nation pirate fleet will be the ongoing antagonist throughout the seafaring series, separate from Gawose/Deela and her agenda.
