Today, we at Knight Edge Media have learned exclusively that the character of Aragorn will be recast with a younger actor in the upcoming Lord of the Rings spin-off film, The Hunt for Gollum. The studio originally wanted Viggo Mortensen to possibly return as the character and use de-aging technology to make him appear younger, given that Mortensen was still very much open to returning for the role (via Instagram). Though it seems like that will not be happening. Several actors have already met with director Andy Serkis about the role, but their names are currently unknown.

Producer Peter Jackson and company could use the same plot device they did in The Hobbit films with an older character telling the story of their younger self. This is how Ian Holm was able to return as an older Bilbo Baggins, but was recast with a younger Martin Freeman. However, bookend cameo scenes with Viggo Mortensen as an older King Elessar, set after the events of The Return of the King, remain pure speculation. Other characters that could appear include Gandalf, Frodo, Bilbo, Legolas, and King Thranduil as the story takes place during the earlier events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Production begins next May back in New Zealand.
