Over the last week, we have learned that Lucasfilm was deep into secretly developing a new Star Wars film with legendary director Steven Soderbergh. Soderbergh is best known for directing the Ocean Eleven films of the early 2000s. The spin-off movie was titled The Hunt for Ben Solo. Adam Driver was expected to return as the character even though he seemingly died at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. The screenplay was written by Rebecca Blunt and rewritten by Scott Z. Burns, following his uncredited work on Rogue One. According to reports, Lucasfilm loved the script and had greenlit the film with Soderbergh and Driver attached. They were even working out production dates to begin filming.

However, the film was passed on to Walt Disney, who killed the entire project. This was the first time that Disney directly canceled a project at Lucasfilm since acquiring the studio, according to Soderbergh on BlueSky. Leadership at Disney, such as Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, said it didn’t make much sense for Ben Solo to return after his sacrifice in The Rise of Skywalker. However, according to reports, the film would clearly explain his return to help audiences understand. The film was officially canned, and the studio moved on to other projects such as Star Wars: Starfighter and The Mandalorian and Grogu.
