Today, a report announced that Netflix has tapped director David Leitch to direct their upcoming Gears of War live-action movie. Leitch is best known for co-directing John Wick and directing high-octane action films like Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2, and last year’s The Fall Guy. The film has developed since 2023, when screenwriter Jon Spaihts came on board to pen the script. Many fans were hoping that director Zack Snyder would tackle the film. However, after the abysmal reception of his adult space opera Rebel Moon, that idea quickly fizzled out. Netflix is producing the movie alongside the original game studio, The Coalition. No casting has been announced yet, though Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) has always fan-cast himself as Marcus Phoenix. A remaster of the first video game, Gears of War: Reloaded, will be released this year on Xbox Series X and PS5 (via Xbox.com).
