Directors Justin Lin or Drew Goddard Are Rumored To Helm Marvel Studios ‘Spider-Man 4’

Late last year, it was revealed that original Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts would not return for the potential Spider-Man 4. This comes off the news he would also be stepping away from the Fantastic Four, and director Matt Shakman took over. The rumor is that Kevin Feige still wanted Watts to return with a more grounded “street level” story that could involve Daredevil and The Kingpin. He is in a plot bidding war with Sony Pictures and wants another massive multiverse film like Spider-Man: No Way Home. Something Feige wants to hold off doing again until Avengers: Secret Wars. The Cosmic Circus mentioned that the film is more about Spider-Man than Peter Parker, as everyone he knows has forgotten who he is in the MCU. However, actress Zendaya is still expected to return as MJ alongside Tom Holland, so the plot point will likely be reversed in this film.

Nevertheless, Watts will not return, and several rumored directors have been mentioned. Daniel Ritchman revealed on his Patreon that director Drew Goddard was a name thrown around to take over. Goddard has been attached to several comic book projects over the years without actually making them, including Neflix’s Daredevil season 1, X-Force at Fox, and The Sinister Six at Sony. Jeff Sneider has now revealed that director  Justin Lin has been thrown into the mix to helm the project. Lin is best known for reviving the Fast & Furious franchise after Tokyo Drift before leaving Fast X. He also directed Star Trek Beyond after director JJ Abrams went to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Again, no director has been attached to the project yet. Production is expected to begin sometime this Fall.
