DC Comics upcoming film Batgirl began filming this month in Glasglow. Several set photos from the film have leaked online including a mural of classic 89′ Batman with surprisingly a version of Robin. The film is expected to take place after the events of The Flash with Michael Keaton now the DC Universe’s version of Bruce Wayne. Originally, Marlon Wayans (via io9) was cast as Robin in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. The character was removed from the film and was introduced in Batman Forever played by Chris O’Donnell.

Now both MyTimeToShine and KC Walsh of Geeks WorldWide have revealed that Batgirl is expected to set up a future Nightwing film. A Nightwing film was long in development with The LEGO Batman director Chris McKay attached to direct. However, with all the executive changes to Warner Brothers; the film fell into development hell. It’s unknown if that film will be resurrected for this new DC Universe. The two also took to Twitter to reveal that Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) is eyed at the top of the list for Nightwing but no deal is in place. Warner Brothers have not yet revealed if Nightwing will be added to their new slate of DC films.

While promoting The Tomorrow War last year Chris Mckay (via Heroic Hollywood) mentioned he hopes the project still becomes a reality:

“I hope it’s still a reality. I hope that we still get to make that movie. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not lost yet. It is obviously something that… they’ve had other priorities, they’ve had other challenges. They’d had things that they needed to do, and I think that they found their way. I think their recent successes, and the stuff that they are planning on doing now, I think it opens the door for us to still be able to do a Nightwing movie. Whether you call it ‘in an alternate universe’ or you pick in their multiverse version which universe it’s part of, there are different ways into it. But Nightwing is a big, action-packed, emotional movie. It may not, budgetarily, be similar to what we do with The Tomorrow War. But from a scope and scale standpoint, as far as the kind of action and the kind of heart, that’s what Nightwing is going to be all about.”
