Back in October, Henry Cavill returned to the role of Superman in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam after first appearing in 2013’s Man of Steel. Cavill announced on Instagram he has officially returned and planned on helping develop a proper sequel to his original Superman film. WB even began looking for writers and heard a pitch from Peak Blinder’s scribe Steven Knight. However, two weeks later, James Gunn and producer Peter Safran took over the future of the DC Universe under Warner Brothers-Discovery CEO David Zaslav. They immediately began mapping out their vision for the DC Universe, which was rumored to be a total reboot of the Snyderverse of the last decade.

Today, The Hollywood Reporter announced that DC Studios co-head James Gunn will officially pen a rebooted Superman film. The film is expected to be a total reboot without Henry Cavill returning. The actor revealed on Instagram that he won’t be playing the character again after his return in Black Adam. However, Gunn has not ruled out a DC reunion with the actor for another character in the future. The report also reveals this film will not have Clark Kent in Smallville but shortly after he is hired at the Daily Planet. Gunn took to Twitter to confirm he has been working on the screenplay for some time before the announcement. It’s unknown if Gunn will ever consider directing the film as he is now the co-head of DC Studios.
