Today, a report announced that director Taika Waititi is set to helm a reboot of Judge Dredd. He is best known for directing Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit. The film will be written by his friend and fellow screenwriter Drew Pearce. Pearce is best known for writing Iron Man 3, The Fall Guy, and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. It will be based on the 1970s British weekly comics by 2000 AD.

The character had a movie starring Sylvester Stallone in the 1990s and a dark, gritty reboot in 2012 starring Karl Urban. However, while 2012’s Dredd was critically praised for its visuals and likeness to The Raid, the film failed at the box office. With Waititi attached to direct, it can be assumed that this will be a much campier take on the character. Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, and Ben Smith will produce the film for Rebellion Developments as film rights holders.
