Today, during the Lionsgate CinemaCon panel, a tiny bit on the next Hunger Games prequel was revealed. The studio announced that original Hunger Games movie writer Billy Ray has returned to the franchise for this prequel. The film was announced last year in conjunction with the announcement of the novel by author Suzanne Collins. The prequel book and subsequent movie will be titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and follow a young Haymitch Abernathy during his time in the 50th Hunger Games.
The novel was just released last month with a jaw-dropping twist ending. Director Francis Lawrence told those attending the convention, “It’s my favorite book in the series.” The novel sold 1.5M copies in its first week alone, almost three times that of Mockingjay. Production on the film adaptation begins this July. It is slated to hit theaters on November 20th, 2026.
