Last year, Sony Pictures released the final Venom film in its trilogy and ultimately suspended all future Sony-Marvel films. Previous movies included Morbius, Madame Webb, and the surprisingly solid Kraven the Hunter. Sony was trying to build its own cinematic universe adjacent to the MCU, like the Fox X-Men universe or the other two Spider-Man franchises, but it never materialized into a Spider-Man crossover event.
While speaking to our friends over at The Playlist, star Tom Hardy revealed that there was a legitimate discussion to have his Venom crossover with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Even if it was just his character and not the others:
“We got close. We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun.”
As many know, Venom does crossover to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Venom: Let There Be Carnage for about 5 minutes (above) and leaves his symbiote goo before being transported back to the Sony universe. This is where they were going to allow Venom to meet Spider-Man, but ultimately, they changed their minds. Though the goo will play a role in the future, like in Avengers: Secret Wars. Internal politics between the studios stopped any real matchup between the two characters. It should be noted that Michael Keaton filmed a cameo for Morbius as Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming, although the scene was never released.
There is a strong possibility that Kevin Feige didn’t want Sony’s Marvel-adjacent universe connected to his MCU. While we will see the Fox X-Men universe part of the ever-growing MCU multiverse, the only Sony universes that will connect are the two previous Spider-Man franchises. Ultimately, Sony moved on and finished their Venom trilogy with Venom: The Last Dance, in which Venom sacrificed himself to save Eddie Brock, effectively ending the Sony-Marvel universe forever.
