Today, a report has announced that HBO is eyeing British actor Paapa Essiedu for the coveted adult role of Professor Severus Snape. The late Alan Rickman’s long-drawn-out enunciation of his lines made the role famous in the original films. Essiedu is best known for his role in I May Destroy You.

Sources have indicated he has been offered the role, but it is unknown if he has accepted. Snape is the wickedly smart and casually cruel Hogwarts potions master who comes across as the story’s primary antagonist in the show’s first season. Production begins this April in the UK.

Harry Potter is now slated to debut on HBO & Max sometime in 2027
