Today, a new report has gone out about the current status of Star Trek 4. The film has had multiple false starts since the previous movie, Star Trek Beyond, hit theaters in 2016. Most recently, director Matt Shakman was attached to direct before stepping away to direct The Fantastic Four at Marvel Studios; that film version included separate drafts from Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires, as well as Lindsey Beer. The studio also prematurely announced that the entire cast would return to Star Trek 4 without telling the cast during an Investor Day presentation in 2022.

Now, screenwriter Steve Yockey has been tapped to pen the script with the intention of this film concluding the reboot of the Kelvin universe starting in 2009. He is best known for writing the HBO series The Flight Attendant. The cast is still expected to return, but still not confirmed. A separate origin film is also in development from director Toby Haynes and writer Seth Grahame-Smith that was announced earlier this year. That film is expected to be set in the Kelvin timeline decades before the 2009 film.
