Today, Sony Pictures announced a world wide search has gone out for the lead role in their upcoming Karate Kid film. The movie was announced earlier this year and was assumed to be a sequel to the 2010 remake starring Jaden Smith. However, it has now been revealed to be a sequel to both the original 80s film and the 2010 remake, as both Ralph Macchio (The Outsiders) and Jackie Chan (The Foreigner, Rush Hour) are set to return. It’s unknown how the film will connect to the sequel series Cobra Kai on Netflix, which is looking to begin filming its final season next year. Allegedly, the creators of Cobra Kai, while not directly involved with the film, have given notes on the script (via Gizmodo). Confirming all the films and possibly the series are set in the same universe.
