Recently, Variety announced that director Simon McQuoid will return for the Mortal Kombat sequel. He helped direct the original reboot in 2021 that starred Lewis Tan, Joe Taslim, Ludi Lin, Max Huang, and Hiroyuki Sanada. However, Kombat was his official directionally debut. Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater has taken over screenwriting duties and will pen the script. Due to the pandemic, the original film had a day-and-date release on HBO Max and in theaters. However, while the cast was praised, the primary concern of the original movie was the lack of the actual Mortal Kombat tournament.
