Earlier this July it was announced a spin-off series from Matt Reeves The Batman was in the works over at HBO Max. the series would follow the Gotham City Police Department as they take on the streets of criminals before the arrival of The Batman. This premise was loosely used on FOX’s Gotham but was quickly abandoned. At this time Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire veteran Terence Winter joined the project alongside director Matt Reeves as showrunner.

Now it is being reported by The Hollywood Reporter that Winter has exited the project over “creative differences”. According to the same report, Joe Barton (Giri/Haji) has taken over as writer and showrunner for the series. Only Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) is expected (so far) to return as Detective James Gordon from the film. The series is still untitled but may be named GCPD or Gotham Central.

Gotham Central will stream exclusively on HBO Max in 2022
