Today, Nintendo announced that a live-action Legend of Zelda movie is in the works with Sony Pictures from producer Avi Arad. A Netflix project was first rumored in 2020 starring Tom Holland during the pandemic, but never moved forward. However, after the success of this year’s Super Mario Brothers, Nintendo & Universal aimed to develop an animated film and live-action film based on their other massive IP, The Legend of Zelda. The animated film is expected to be set in the Super Mario Universe, while the live-action movie will be more grounded. Sony Pictures have since picked up the live-action rights.

The announcement also revealed that director Wes Ball will direct the film after he finishes work on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ball is also known for directing The Maze Runner series in the early 2010s. Shigeru Miyamoto is set to produce the film for Nintendo. The film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., with more than 50% financed by Nintendo. Derek Connally (Detective Pikachu, Jurassic World) has been attached to write the screenplay, according to Deadline.
