After the massive success of The Super Mario Bros Movie by Illumination & Universal, the studio looks at another top Nintendo property. According to Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic Podcast, Universal Pictures is looking to acquire the rights to The Legend of Zelda from Nintendo. Illumination would once again develop the property into an animated feature film. In 2020, we at Knight Edge Media heard several years ago Netflix wanted to develop a live-action Zelda series, with the streaming service eyeing Tom Holland as Link. However, nothing came out of it beyond a production grid.
This partnership between Nintendo and Universal would lead many to believe that they could create a Super Smash Brothers cinematic universe. The arena fighting game featured many top Nintendo characters like Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Metroid, and Starfox as they face off in several character-themed arenas to fight. There is no word on a writer or director for The Legend of Zelda.
