Recently, Walt Disney announced a live-action adaption of the hit 2016 animated film Moana, which has been put into development. Dwayne Johnson will return as the demi-god Maui, but the studio is looking to recast the role of Moana. Unfortunately, no director was announced at the time of the announcement.
Now, Daniel Richtman has revealed on his Patreon that stage director Thomas Kail is circling the director’s chair. Kail worked alongside playwriter and singer Lin-Manuel Miranda on the hit stage play Hamilton. Miranda wrote several songs for Moana and seems to be on his way to returning for the live-action adaptation. Jared Bush also returns to pen the screenplay after writing the original animated film. Production is expected to begin later this Fall in Hawaii.
UPDATE: The story was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Moana is slated to hit sometime in 2025
