Today, we at Knight Edge Media were able to work alongside Whats-on-Netflix on a casting call for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3. Most of the character descriptions were for a casting call that already had actors announced before filming began in late May. However, there are a few character castings that have yet to be revealed for the third season of the live-action series:
[ CARLOS ] – “Character is male, 40s – mid-50s, Indigenous. A strong leader who is more committed to his job than to his family and he doesn’t know how to fix that. RECURRING GUEST STAR”
[ KENJI ] – “Character is male, 40s-60s, East Asian / Southeast Asian. A vagabond who’s been living a rough life for quite some time. Underneath his roguish exterior, he’s a bit of a philosopher and a rebel. Fight/Sword experience a plus. RECURRING GUEST STAR.”
[ OHTA ] – “Character is male, 60s-70s, Asian. A tireless mentor who uses his superpowers (wisdom and strength) to better humanity. Still nimble after all these years. Martial arts/fighting experience a plus. RECURRING GUEST STAR”
[ YUTO ] – “Character is male, 50s-60s, Asian. Sadistic military commander whose retirement hasn’t quelled his intensity. ONE EPISODE GUEST STAR.”
[ PROFESSOR SHUN ] – “Character is male, late 20s-30s, Asian. Playful, clever and unspoiled by the wider world, he marches to the beat of his own drum. GUEST STAR”
Carlos is obviously the codename for Hakoda of the Water Tribe, and he was recently recast as Adam Beach back in May. Yuto sounds very much like Yon Rha, the retired Fire Nation Commander who murdered Katara and Sokka’s mother. Professor Shun sounds like a new original character, as the only professor the Team meets is Professor Zei (played by Hoa Xuande) in season 2, but he dies in The Library. They could be adapting “The Headband” episode and giving one of Aang’s Fire Nation teachers a larger, more compassionate role, though that is just speculation. Neither role has been officially announced yet.

The most interesting descriptions are for Kenji. We can confirm that Kenji is indeed Master Piandao (who is played by Jon Jon Briones), as evidenced by the sword-fighting experience. However, Piandao is not known for being a homeless vagabond but lives in the Fire Nation high society within his mansion. That would be an interesting change to his character unless he is still rich but chooses to travel the world as a vagabond to help those in need before the events of season 3. It’s completely unknown who Ohta could be among the original season 3 characters. Production is currently underway for season 3 in Vancouver and runs through November 7th.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 will debut on Netflix sometime in 2027
