Today, the South Korean animation studio Studio Mir announced that it will partner with Paramount Animation & Avatar Studios on a new untitled theatrical Avatar: The Last Airbender movie. They are best known for animating The Legend of Korra in 2014, but recently worked on My Adventures with Superman and Devil May Cry.

Studio Mir is pleased to announce that it has partnered with global entertainment companies Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation to produce a new theatrical animation based on the world of ‘Avatar’.

This project is a hybrid theatrical animation that combines the traditional 2D animation with modern CG technology, and will be produced based on the world of the original series ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’.

The production will be led by Marianne Garger, Latifer Ouaou, and original creators Brian Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, while director Lauren Montgomery will be in charge of directing, raising expectations.

Through this project, Studio Mir will once again demonstrate its directing and animation capabilities on the global stage, and will do its best to be recognized for both originality and technology in producing high-quality content.

In addition, along with this project, Studio Mir will recruit personnel for the 2D animation and CG divisions to strengthen its production capabilities for new animations. Please check the separate notice for related job openings.

We are delighted that Studio Mir has joined the Avatar theatrical animation project that global fans have been waiting for for a long time, and we will continue to come back with works that can breathe together with viewers around the world.

Thank you.

It’s unknown which film Studio Mir is developing, as Flying Bark Animation has been hard at work on the first theatrical film slated to hit theaters next year (via Flying Bark Australia). Studio Mir may be simply taking over animation duties for the second film of the planned trilogy from Flying Bark, which could be odd depending on how different the animation styles will look on screen.

It’s also possible that the second film will not be a direct sequel and will be its own self-contained story (as originally reported in 2022), allowing multiple animation studios to work on multiple individual films. However, Avatar Studios has not announced how this planned trilogy will work.

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will hit theaters on January 30th, 2026
