Today, Warner Brothers announced their upcoming spin-off, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, will be released around Christmas 2027. The film was announced last year with a new partnership between Warner Bros and Lord of the Rings rights holders Embracer Group Sweden. The latest movie will be directed and star Andy Serkis after his work as 2nd unit director on The Hobbit films. He also directed Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Mowgli. The report mentions this is the first of two films, but it is unknown whether this will be split into two parts. Original screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will be teaming with The War of the Rohirrim writers Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou on the film. Peter Jackson is set to executive produce. Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, and Viggo Mortensen are all rumored to return.
