Today, a report announced that writer Potsy Ponciroli has been tapped by Warner Brothers to pen the sequel to the 1985 classic The Goonies. This comes from the news that there will be a 40th-anniversary celebration for the original film with the original cast later this year. The plot is currently unknown, which means its unknown actors will return for the sequel. The original cast included a young Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Josh Brolin, amongst others. Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment. Chris Columbus and Lauren Shuler Donner will serve as executive producers. Columbus wrote the original film and wrote the treatment for the sequel.
