Marvel Studios Courting Director Shawn Levy For Next ‘Avengers’ Film

In over a month, Marvel Studios upcoming multiversal crossover film Deadpool & Wolverine will finally hit theaters, hoping to jumpstart this relatively slow summer blockbuster season. The film is expected to celebrate the Fox-Marvel universe, with characters from the previous X-Men, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four movies rumored to appear. After working together on Free Guy and The Adam Project, Ryan Reynolds brought Shawn Levy to direct the third film. Levy has also directed Reel Steel and The Pink Panther. Marvel seems to be highly pleased with the director.

Today, a report revealed that the studio is considering Levy for another film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It could be one of the next Avengers films as they begin pre-production on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (title pending) and Avengers: Secret Wars. The report doesn’t specify which film he could direct but states that screenwriter Michael Waldron has given Levy the script as they wait on his decision. The rewritten script by Waldron was due to the low performance of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantiamaina and the firing of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. 60+ characters are up to be used in Avengers: Secret Wars according to the report.

The problem is that Shawn Levy is still highly involved as a director and producer in the final season of Stranger Things at Netflix, which is currently in production. He is also attached to an untitled Star Wars film over at Lucasfilm, though it is unknown what stage of development that is at. Though with his handling of the multiversal aspects of Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s not incredibly surprising he would be handed an Avengers film. However, you would expect the studio to look at Levy in directing their upcoming X-Men reboot by screenwriter Michael Lesslie after his time with Deadpool & Wolverine. The studio will still be contacting other directors until Levy makes a decision.
