Today, director Jon Turteltaub appeared on a National Treasure fan podcast to speak about the potential third film in the franchise. He also hopes Nicholas Cage will want to return once the film is written. His last movie, Book of Secrets, was released over 17 years ago and starred Nicholas Cage as Beniman Franklin Gates. In the first film, Ben Gates used clues set down by the Freemasons to find buried treasure brought over by a ship originally from the Roman Empire. The second film features Gates and his crew finding a version of El Dorado hidden behind the Mount Rushmore by native americans. So fans have always wanted a third film to complete the trilogy. However, fans were instead given a Disney+ series, Edge of History, set in the same universe with new characters, but the streaming network promptly canceled it.

National Treasure 3 has no set release date
