Today, Deadline announced that Game of Thrones and WandaVision Emmy-award-winning director Matt Shakman will helm the next Star Trek film for Paramount Pictures. The film is expected to see the return of Chris Pine and his crew of the USS Enterprise which began in 2009. However, it has been noted no deal has been in place yet for the actor’s return. Actor Anton Yelchin passed away in 2016 after the release of the 3rd film. It’s unknown how the sequel will explain his character’s absence from the crew.
They were set to return previously for a sequel by female director S.J Clarkson but that fell apart during negotiations. Chris Hemsworth was also expected (somehow) to return from the dead as Geroge Kirk. The new film will be written by female screenwriters Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Noah Hawley and Quentin Tarantino have also pitched separate Star Trek films for the studio but both have been put on hold. JJ Abrams will return to produce the film under his Bad Robot banner after directing the first two films. Production begins sometime in spring 2022.
Star Trek 4 has no set release date
