Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ TV Series Seeking Native American & Asian Actors During Casting

Today, our friends at The IllumiNerdi revealed that casting has indeed begun on Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series. While the series has had several bumpy starts with the original show creators leaving the project in late 2020 things seem to finally be moving forward. The ethnicitys of the original cartoon will indeed transfer over to the live-action show as compared to the 2010 feature film The Last Airbender. Something the original creators of show always intended.

The report states that casting for the role of Aang will look for actors of East or South Asian descent, Sokka & Katara will seek actors of Indigenous North American descent, and Zuko of East or South Asian descent. The report also mentions that while the streaming service originally considered switching the ages of Sokka and Katara. The service decided to switch back their ages to what was originally depicted in the show; with Aang 12, Katara 14 and Sokka 16 and Zuko 17.

We had learned that production on the series was expected to begin this August in Vancouver, Canada. However, with the new changes according to Whats-on-Netflix, the project has been pushed again to start filming this November. Albert Kim has reportedly taken over as showrunner on the project.
