Two weeks ago, production on The Batman: Part II was shut down with only a few months left in filming. The shutdown stemmed from a personal family situation that director Matt Reeves needed to handle privately and step away from filming (via Deadline). Today, director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Black Bag) announced he will take over from Matt Reeves to finish filming. Reeves will stay in constant contact with Soderbergh remotely for the rest of filming and will rejoin the project in post-production. Soderbergh said in a statement:
“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”
Unfortunately, this production shutdown on a comic book movie will prompt fans to recall the last time something like this happened: 2017’s Justice League. While it’s awful to compare one private matter with another, in 2017 the studio irrationally fired Zack Snyder from the project (via Collider) without warning and replaced him with Joss Whedon. This is a totally different situation, as Sodenberg is doing this as a personal favor to the Reeves family. Now Reeves can focus on his family; which is all that matters in this terrible situation.
The Batman: Part II is still slated to hit theaters on February 18th, 2028
Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes. 🦇
