One of the biggest concerns from fans that came out of the release of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender was the writing. The original writers room included creators Bryan Konietzko & Mike DiMartino (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Albert Kim (Nikita), Joshua Hale Fialkov (Young Justice, The Code) Christine Boylan (Cloak & Dagger, The Punisher), Keely MacDonald (Sleepy Hollow, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe), Gabriel Llanas (Supergirl, National Treasure: Edge of History), Emily Kim (Quantum Leap), Hunter Ries, and Audrey Wong Kennedy (Horizon Zero Dawn). The writers had the incredibly hard task of world-building and overlying multiple plot points throughout the middle of the season, most notably during Omashu’s arc. Unfortunately, that led to major exposition dumps that were off-putting to many viewers.
Since then, a new writers’ room has been established for season 2 behind new showrunner Christine Boylan in early 2023. This writer’s room has several of the original writers returning, including Joshua Hale Fialkov (Young Justice, The Code), Keely MacDonald (Sleepy Hollow, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe), and Gabriel Llanas (Supergirl, National Treasure: Edge of History). Several new writers have also joined the Netflix series, including Helen Shang (The Rings of Power, Welcome to Derry), Teresa Huang (SEAL Team), Phinneas Kiyomura (Twisted). Hopefully, with these fresh new faces, we can get a more streamlined story going into season 2 and utilize actress Kiawentiio to her full acting potential, as Katara was mostly sidelined in the first season. This writer’s room looks mostly female, which is a great step forward for the industry. Another major hope by fans is that the writers keep Toph’s self-deprecating humor about her blindness, which defines her entire personality. It’s unknown who will stay on for the season 3 writers’ room at this time. Production on season 2 will begin later this summer.
