Today, Variety announced that actress Dakota Johnson had been tapped to star in Sony Pictures’ upcoming Spider-Man spin-off film Madame Web. The actress is best known for her roles in 50 Shades of Grey and the Suspiria remake. The character has seen many incarnations, including the typical 60-year-old Cassandra Web version that can see anywhere within the Spider-Verse using telepathy. With the casting of Johnson, they will go with the younger Julia Carpenter version of the character from earth-616.
The Defenders director S.J Clarkson was hired back in 2020 for an untitled Sony film but has now been revealed to be Madame Web. Screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Morbius) will pen the script. In April, the studio is gearing up to release Morbius starring Jared Leto, and begin filming Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, in March. Another spin-off film in development includes Spider-Woman from director Olivia Wilde.
