Today, Amazon MGM announced that they have officially renewed Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for a third season on Prime Video. This was already assumed to have occurred, as casting began on the third season several months after the second season finale in October 2024. We at Knight Edge Media also revealed that the writer’s room for season 3 was completed last year. The following season is expected to have a major time jump from season 2 and be set squarely during The War of Elves and Sauron.
According to the report, Sauron/Annatar will begin his creation of The One Ring in the upcoming season and is still expected to run 5 seasons. The show still has a way to go to cover major events still left in The Second Age, including the fall of Numenor, the fall of Khazad-dum, the rise of the Witch King, and The Last Alliance of Men and Elves. Production begins this spring at Shepperton Studios in the UK.
