Today, a report has revealed that Warner Brothers has contacted actor Ian McKellen about a possible return as Galdfaf the Grey in the upcoming spin-off film The Hunt for Gollum. As in the original novel, Gandalf the Grey sets Aragorn on the path to find Gollum and obtain information on The One Ring. While speaking to The Big Issue, the famed actor mentioned his possible return following a stage accident this year in London.

“Enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating … I can’t tell you any more than that. I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him. When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So, they better be quick.”

The film was announced earlier this year, with Andy Serkis returning to star in direct as the title villain. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Phillipa Boyens will all return to help produce this new set of Lord of the Rings films from Warner Brothers and Embracer Group. Production is expected to begin sometime next year in New Zealand as the team visited Hobbiton location two week ago (below).

The Hunt for Gollum has no set release date
