Today, Netflix announced they will renew Avatar: The Last Airbender for two more seasons. This would be the same length as the original Nickelodeon series to conclude Aang’s journey as the Avatar after season 3. This comes off the first season debut on February 22nd with a massive viewership ahead of One Piece (via Deadline). The series also sits Fresh at 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. The report has also confirmed our original report in 2022 that the streaming service will be filming both seasons back-to-back due to the actor’s ages. Gordon Cormier was cast at 11 and is already 14, while Kiawentiio will turn 18 later this year.
The way the writers will have to mitigate their ages is to allow natural aging within the show, instead of how the original series took place over one year. They also haven’t revealed when Sozin’s Comet is expected to return, but it could be within three years like M. Night Shyamalan did in his film The Last Airbender. It’s unknown how many episodes each season will have, but a major complaint is the shorter runtime of season 1, which is just eight episodes. As the streaming service is worried about the actor’s ages, it’s not unreasonable to assume production will begin on season 2 sometime this year (within six months) back in Vancouver. A writer’s room was already assembled back in January 2023 on the series ahead of the WGA strikes.
