Marvel Studios released the final episode of their Ms. Marvel series on Disney+. The series was mostly praised for the direction and newcomer actress Iman Vellani in the title role. However, the low stakes and pretty C-level villains like The Clandestians are what bring the series down a tiny bit. Another major praise the series has gotten is how the show creator Bisha K. Ali integrated many aspects of Pakistan’s history and culture into Kamala Khan’s origin more than the comic ever did. Though a bombshell is revealed about what Kamala really is during the episode’s final moments.

The show originally stated that Kamala Khan is related to alternate dimensional begins known as The Clandestians. However, the people of Pakistan referred to them as Djinn from their folklore. In the episode’s final moment, Kamala’s trusted best friend Bruno reveals that her DNA also is different from the rest of her family as she has a special kind of “mutation” related to her genes. The scene reveals that Kamala is a mutant like the X-Men compared to an Inhuman like in the comics. This massive departure from the original comic has upset many fans with Feige’s creative decision. Though justified given the highly negative impact the live-action series gave the characters in 2017 on ABC. (Anson Mount does return to play a variant of Black Bolt in Doctor Strange 2)
Now today, in an exclusive interview with Empire, Ms. Marvel comic co-creator Sana Amanat and executive producer of the series reveals that she wanted Kamala Khan to a be mutant all along but was blocked by Marvel Entertainment:
“We’ve been talking about it for some time. Here’s a really important thing that people do not know – when we were thinking about the character of Kamala back, back, back in the day in 2012, 2013, when [G.] Willow [Wilson, comic book writer] and myself were ideating, we originally wanted to make her a mutant. That was the whole intention, to be able to do that.”
She goes on to add:
“I will say, I think this is opening up doors for a lot of great storytelling, obviously, as a huge fan, um… of the word ‘mutation’. I’m really happy about it.”
It seems that Kevin Feige has allowed his version of Kamala Khan to be the version the comic book creators originally intended. Despite what some comic book purists might say.
